Doing The Right Thing Is Enough

Focusing on the Daily Stoic Meditation for July 15 — Doing The Right Thing Is Enough, as outlined by Ryan Holiday in the bestseller 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance and the Art Of Living.

“When you’ve done well and another has benefited by it, why like a fool do you look for a third thing on top — credit for the good deed or a favor in return?”

— MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 7.73

Doing The Right Thing Is Enough

Doing the right thing is enough.

It’s your duty as a good person to do the right thing.

Everyone should do the right thing.

Simply helping others, offering a compliment, trying to assist someone when they’re struggling — this is enough.

Looking for external recognition for your good actions — praise, celebration — or even asking for a favour in return, is foolish. Be content with the good deed itself, nothing more is needed.

Action Points

Prioritise doing good things.

Prioritise doing the right thing, in all situations, no matter what.

Do not do the mean thing, or the cruel thing, or the spiteful thing; do the right thing.

It is your duty to be good to yourself and to others.

In Conclusion

  1. Doing the right thing is enough; don’t look for external rewards.
  2. Prioritise being good to yourself and others.
