What is grit?

Grit is a positive, non-cognitive trait based on a person’s perseverance of effort combined with their passion for a particular long-term goal or end state.

Grit is known as your drive to achieve long term goals and desires. It regards consistent motivation, effort and output in regards to goals.

Essentially, grit is one’s ability to endure and persist over time on a journey towards accomplishing big and hard things. Grit is a combination of desire and fortitude, in which an individual is willing to do the many small, mundane tasks that give us no pleasure in and of themselves, so that we may realize our dreams. Grit is one’s ability to overcome adversity, to bounce back from defeat, to learn from failure, and to “keep on keeping on.”

Angela Duckworth, an American academic and psychologist, splits grit into two things; perseverance and passion. Work on cultivating both aspects of grit.
