What is deep work?

Cal Newport defines deep work as “professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capacities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.”

Deep work is the work that leads to massive progress and results. It’s the work that challenges you the most, pushes you to your limit, and is usually performed in a flow state.

When you’re completing deep work, there’s no distractions; no social media, nobody talking to you, and no distracting thoughts. You’re entirely free to work with focus.

Some examples of deep work are;

  • Writing articles/newsletters.
  • Analysing data.
  • Completing practice exams/questions.

The difficulty in achieving deep work

In today’s world where technology is everywhere and people are more distracted than ever, it’s incredibly hard to reach a state of deep work that allows you to produce great quality work.
