What are the four stages of learning?
- Unconscious Incompetence; you don’t know that you don’t know.
- Conscious Incompetence; you know that you don’t know.
- Conscious Competence; you work at what you don’t know.
- Unconscious Competence; you don’t have to think about knowing it.
Unconscious Incompetence
You don’t know that you don’t know.
In the first stage of learning, you’re unaware that you don’t know how to do something. You don’t recognise that you can’t do something.
Conscious Incompetence
You know that you don’t know.
In this stage, you become aware of the fact that you don’t know a certain thing, or you don’t know how to perform a certain skill.
This stage is often known as the rude awakening; when you realise that you actually can’t do something, and you have to learn.
Conscious Competence
You work at what you don’t know.
