Difficulty is an ingrained part in everybody’s life. No matter who you are, where you are or what you do, you’re going to experience some form of difficult situation and change. Life has these challenges built in.

Some changes are big — breakups, moving house or getting a promotion — while other changes might not be as monumental.

When something difficult, unexpected and unknown happens, what’s the best way to react to that?

Research demonstrates that responding instead of reacting is, in most situations, the best course of action. What does this mean?

Responding; slowing down, taking time to objectively analyse the situation and then responding calmly. Responding is more deliberate, intentional and thoughtful.

Reacting; acting out of emotions, being rash and not thinking about your actions. Reacting is quick — you feel and then you do.

When a big change happens, especially if it’s something negative and unexpected, try and respond rather than react. Don’t allow yourself to be consumed by emotions — breathe and take time to respond.

The 4 P Framework is something invaluable that can help you respond rather than react, enabling you to overcome life’s challenges and changes.

The 4 P’s Framework

  1. Pause; take a deep breath and just collect yourself. In this period, don’t take any action asides breathing.
