No One Has A Gun To Your Head
Focusing on the Daily Stoic Meditation for July 22 — No One Has A Gun To Your Head, as outlined by Ryan Holiday in the bestseller 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance and the Art Of Living.
“Nothing is noble if it’s done unwillingly or under compulsion. Every noble deed is voluntary.”
— SENECA, MORAL LETTERS, 66.16b
You don’t have to do the right thing.
In any situation, you have two options; do the right thing, or do the immoral thing.
You know that your duty, as a human and as a stoic, is to do the right thing. Your duty is to be good, to be kind, logical, authentic, reasoned etc. This is your duty and you know this is the option you should take.
But you don’t have to do the right thing.
There’s always two options, and you could choose the immoral option instead. You could choose to be selfish, deceiving, unkind, rude, or even simply evil. You have this choice too.
There’s the option to do the right thing in every situation, but nobody has a gun to your head — it’s down to you whether you take that option or not.
It’s down to you.
You don’t have to do the right thing, but you know that you should.
It’s down to you, your decision and your actions.
Are you going to be selfish, cunning or evil?
Or are you going to do the right thing?
In Conclusion
- You are always faced with two decisions; the right thing, or the immoral thing.
- It’s entirely down to you as to which option you take.
