Tenzin Gyatso — the 14th Dalai Lama
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, in a small hamlet located in Taktser, Amdo, in northeastern Tibet.
In the 1950s during the conflict with China, His Holiness was called upon to assume full political leadership of Tibet. He was forced out of the country into exile and has since been living in Dharamsala in northern India.
His Holiness leads the cause of the Tibetan people in a spirit of non-violence and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
His Holiness has been a lifelong student of Buddhist philosophy, peacemaking, and happiness. He retired from political activity in 2011 to focus solely on spiritual affairs. He has become a globally respected authority on happiness, having dedicated much of his life to promoting happiness in governments and cultures around the world.
