Duchenne De Boulogne — the true face of joy.
In 1862, French Anatomist Duchenne De Boulogne found that certain distinct facial muscles were involuntarily engaged when the true feeling of joy was experienced by an individual.
The true face of joy is a combination of the zygomatic major muscle, your cheek muscles and the orbicularis oculi — a muscle which is just behind the eye and in front of the temple. These muscles make up the human smile, known as the Duchenne smile, which everyone experiences.
A simple trick to be happier.
One of the simplest ways to be happier is to smile.
You can reverse the process of the Duchenne smile; rather than happiness causing the smile to generate, you can smile, and this will generate a feeling of happiness and joy.
Make a conscious effort to smile more — both when you’re alone and surrounded by other people. See how the smile can generate feelings of contentment and happiness.
What does the Duchenne Smile tell us about happiness?
The Duchenne Smile tells us three major things about happiness;
- Happiness is a human condition that is shared by everyone around the world — we all smile the Duchenne Smile.
- Happiness can be seen visually and physiologically.
- You can stimulate yourself to be happier through smiling.
