Your Career Is Not A Life Sentence

Focusing on the Daily Stoic Meditation for July 31 — Your Career Is Not A Life Sentence, as outlined by Ryan Holiday in the bestseller 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance and the Art Of Living.

“How disgraceful is the lawyer whose dying breath passes while at court, at an advanced age, pleading for unknown litigants and still seeking the approval of ignorant spectators.”

— SENECA, ON THE BREVITY OF LIFE, 20.2

Every few years, or even every couple of months, the same thing happens; an old millionaire with a great deal of wealth and landownership becomes unfit to manage their affairs, and so they’re forced to step down from their positions of power — this is natural with old age. The issue, however, is that these old individuals often refuse to create a succession plan or any form of plan for what was to happen after they stepped down.

When this happens, you lose your work and everything else. With no succession plan, everything simply goes to nothing.

Your only pursuit cannot be work.

You cannot live your life solely dedicated to work and work only — there is so much more than life.
